DRAMA
MORAVIAN NIGHTS
one of these days FARRARM STRAUS will publish it!!!
I am proposing to do an online inquiry, a post mortem, on the two matters in the subject
line of this communication, two related subjects, the second arising out of the former,
at the developing http://handke-yugo.blogspot.
and wanted to ask you to join in or forward this communication to
those who you think might be interested in:
[1] A narrowly focused discussion on how it came to be that the Serbians and then Milosevic
were made responsible for the disintegration and the great majority of war crimes committed there; while each of the formers parts of the federation were encouraged in their nationalist longings but for the Serbians.
For both my points I use as a focus the following observation of Noam Chomsky's: "The nefarious atrocities regularly elicit religious fervor, dramatic posturing, baseless claims to inflate them as much as possible - and fury if anyone does not blindly join the parade, but seeks to determine the truth, cites the most reputable authoritiesexposes the innumerable fabrications. The common reaction to such treachery is an impressive torrent of deceit. There is an instructive record, quite well documented in many cases. The reasons are not hard to explain. The topic should be pursued systematically, but that is unlikely, obviously." Naom Chomsky

So the only question I propose to address is how it came to be that within such a short time there was this kind of general unanimity. It is a cold case investigation; and why the outrage and hatred of anyone, such as Handke, who took a different, and far more experienced position. I do not want to repeat everything I said in my opening salvo, a letter to David Rieff

Michael, while this may not be directly related to your basic questions about how world opinion came to be so self-righteously sure of a simplistic assessment, it proves that such views still are alive and doing damage.
The April 12, 2010 "New Yorker" has a very long piece by David Samuels called "The Pink Panthers: A tale of diamonds,k thieves, and the Balkans." After reading it, had I not known better, I would have figured that all men in Serbia and Montenegro are jewel thieves (or at least rent Audis to jewel thieves) and that the few women there are mothers of jewel thieves or their molls.
A couple of examples of the purple prose: "I headed to the town hall of the most notorious nest of thieves in the Balkans."
"When he finished drinking, he wiped the lip of the glass, in a way that suggested that such actions were a normal part of his routine."
"After Milosevic's successor, Zoran Djindjic, was assassinated, in 2003, Zivkovic became Prime Minister. . . ." -- Djindjic was indeed Milosevic's successor, after leading protests against him for months; but that's not as important, evidently, than pointing that Zivkovic, Djindjic's successor "wore a navy-blue blazer and had a burnished complexion."
gag me with a spoon.
Well, what do you expect of the New Yorker and its Obama loving editor in chief. There was a time that the New Yorker published a lot of Handke, THE LEFT HANDED WOMAN in its entirety, a huge section from THE REPETITION a handsome selection of my translations from INNERWORLD and other things. Remnick or whatever his name is and his fiction and poetry editor don't do it for me, and I haven't read any of their essays for ages, but it's still raking in the ads, so from the Conde-Nast point of view he is doing something right: and that means to feed the platitudes platitudes.
